The Benefits Of Writing In The Morning

If you’ve scrolled through the writing corners of social media, you may have seen references to the 5 AM Writers Club.

These are the writers who get up early to begin their day with a writing session (not necessarily at 5 AM, though).

Some have made it a meditative ritual to set the tone for the day ahead. For others, it’s their way to make the time for writing before rushing out the door for work, school, and the chaos that is life. Either way, writing in the morning has its benefits!

Coming from someone who has never been a morning person and has tried (and failed) to join the 5 AM Writers Club, here are some of the benefits of morning writing sessions that make the Rise and Shine writing grind so appealing.

Mental Clarity

Even though the fog of dreams may linger and your blankets might feel too warm for you to want to get out of bed, your thoughts might be clearer in the morning than as the day is wrapping up. Your brain has had a chance to rest, making it a perfect time to dive into your writing because you’re not bogged down or worn out.

Getting a good night's rest is important regardless of when you write, but you might feel more energetic in the morning, which can make it easier to brainstorm and focus.

Passing The Vibe Check

Many writers enjoy morning writing sessions because they can help set the vibe for the new day. There's something quaint and cozy about a freshly brewed cup of coffee or tea while the earliest of birds chirp outside that puts you in a good mood.

It doesn't stop there! In fact, it's only the beginning. Checking something off your writing to-do list or making progress on your book offers a sense of mood-boosting accomplishment that can set the momentum for the rest of your day.

A Lack Of Distractions

Depending on your household, waking up to write before everyone else might be your best chance at writing without interruption and distractions.

As the world wakes up, it creates a symphony of distractions. Alarms going off, cars starting and pulling out of the drive, phone notifications pinging, so on and so forth.

The wee hours of the morning, however, create a window of opportunity for quiet, reflective writing sessions that can be surprisingly productive.

Making The Most Of The Time You've Got

Like I mentioned in my post about writing at night, our chosen writing time might not actually be chosen. Rather, it's what we've got to work with, and we have to make the most of it.

For many writers, the morning is the only time they have for their writing amid the hustle and bustle of life. Your book won't write itself, so you've got to make the time for it.

It may mean sleeping a little less (or going to bed earlier than you typically would), but even if it’s only a few minutes, slow progress is still progress. Every word counts, no matter what time of day it’s written.

The 5 AM Writers Club is a thing for a reason! So many writers have found that they get their best writing done in the morning. With fewer distractions and a refreshed mind, the earliest hours of the day may be your perfect time for writing.
